The rolling of a yacht can be the result of (ocean) swells or passing vessels. Whether sailing, stationary or at anchor, these movements affect onboard comfort levels. The Dutch company Dynamic Marine Systems (DMS) supplies various stabiliser systems for a variety of vessels in all sizes.
RotorSwing Zero Speed
After an extensive engineering stage and period of elaborate testing, DMS Holland has now introduced the RotorSwing: the first fully electrically powered roll stabiliser for yachts up to 30 metres based on the Magnus effect. The RotorSwing system is available with or without ZeroSpeed capability.
The Magnus effect is achieved with rapidly rotating cylinders which, depending on the direction of rotation, generate an upward or downward pressure. As the rotors do not create a steering effect, the position of the rotor underneath the yacht can be easily determined. As well as reducing roll while underway, the system now also works when a yacht is stationary. The results of the tests are astounding. The rotors can be placed at an angle of 45° for an optimal roll reduction at up to 18 knots. For higher speeds the rotors are retracted below or inside the hull to minimise resistance.
As the system can be fully installed within three days, you can benefit even in the midst of the sailing season or as part of a refit project.
AntiRoll
AntiRoll is a roll damping system specifically developed for superyachts. Thanks to its unique, dual-axis fin stabiliser, which rotates whilst sailing and flaps at anchor, AntiRoll provides stabilisation both underway and at zero-speed without compromising on performance.
The high aspect fins have 50 to 75% less resistance when underway. In addition, the flapping motion of the fins has a greater lifting force than fins which just rotate. The fins can be retracted up to or inside the hull, making the system ideal for sailing yachts too. AntiRoll uses an intelligent hybrid power drive resulting in relatively low power requirements. Based on research performed by MARIN, AntiRoll has been shown to function better than traditional roll damping systems.
