The management of RotorSwing Marine has over 40 years of experience in the design and production of roll damping equipment for both superyachts and professional vessels. While designing a retractable system, they faced an unforeseen new challenge in the form of the Magnus effect. The designers had not expected that rotating cylinders, as opposed to fin blades, would create so much lift.
After intensive testing in the factory’s test basin, the RotorSwing 140 was released for sale on the market in 2012. The system is designed mainly for yachts up to around 20 metres, but can also be used in larger vessels if four rotors are used. A few vessels over 30 metres have now been fitted with such a quad system.
The electrical drive makes installation simple and there is no need for oil reservoirs, filters, valves or expensive hydraulic connections. But the most spectacular aspect is the roll damping at low speed. The system enhances the comfort and safety of the crew from around three knots upwards. Besides being retractable and, therefore, free from protruding elements such as fins, the RotorSwing minimises resistance at full deployment with the patented RAKE position. The rotors pivot backwards under an adjustable angle, reducing resistance and making the system suitable for speeds of over 16 knots.
Another patented model of the RotorSwing is the special Multi4 ZeroSpeed version, a system that can be used when at anchor or adrift. This is a custom-built system that will be adapted and manufactured in close cooperation with the shipyard.
