Surveyors actually prefer to have the captain or potential buyer present when inspecting a yacht. This way, clients can see for themselves which unexpected features or possible problems are found during the inspection. “It is a very educational and interesting experience for watersports and yachting enthusiasts to see how professional surveyors look at a yacht and the type of issues they discover which are hidden at first glance,” explains surveyor Koen Coers.
Coers Yacht Surveyors has been inspecting some 250 pleasure craft a year since 1986. Coers is often asked for a purchase inspection by sailors interested in buying a yacht, and sometimes the inspections involve appraisals or expert surveys to determine the nature and cause of specific shortcomings. The expertise provided is obviously entirely independent, and the bureau has all the required diplomas and certifications.
After studying to be a maritime officer and a period of working in professional shipping, Koen Coers trained with various companies in the watersport sector as preparation for his career as a yacht expert. The bureau is certified by the EMCI and HISWA, and is associated with the VRT and NVEP.
For purchase inspections, Coers surveys the quality of the construction of the hull, decks and superstructure, the technical installations, navigation equipment and propulsion system. The bureau then sends an extensive written and digital report in the client’s preferred language the next day. The diverse activities of the yacht expert can be followed via Twitter and Facebook under the name ‘coersexpertise’.
